What I'm wearing, my shopping cart, and some entertainment reccos
Happy Sunday!
I’m writing to you with shaky arms as I recover from a friend’s workout-inspired birthday. I was promised a girly day and a breathwork meditation class. I walked into (and crawled out of) a Rumble class. HBD though, Kelly!
Recent updates on what I’m wearing, what’s filling my shopping cart and my screen time, and a few other scattered thoughts.
Read on, share with your friends, and let me know what you think!
What I’m wearing & an NYC recco
A very casual work look, night out with friends, and afternoon shopping.
My night out top is new. It’s part of a matching set that I don’t love together, but they’re cute individually. I’m always a little bit thinking about the Selkie and House of CB corset tops, so this upholstered style top is my perfect balance of a little trendy and a style I’ve been considering years. I’m only a little embarrassed to say it’s from Altar’d State.
I must also caveat that I am deeply self-conscious about my posture, so I think I can only wear strapless tops with my hair down.
If you don’t recognize the blue checked skirt, it’s part of the set I wore to a horse race in 2022.
Ugh, one of my favorite looks ever. I’m trying to get more wear out of this - I love it so much why would I let it waste away in my closet!
And as these things go, my mom picked it out. HBD to Kelli, the only mom with amazing taste (sorry to the other moms).
Finally, a look from date night & an NYC recommendation. Jake surprised me with tickets to see Uncle Vanya at Lincoln Center. It’s a modern rewrite of an 1899 Anton Chekhov play about a very crowded family estate, told mostly from the point of view of Uncle Vanya. His character is both a relatable cantankerous grump and a deeply burdened estate manager trying to do right by his late-sister’s daughter. It’s Steve Carell’s Broadway debut, and he was just incredible and perfect for this role. The whole cast was stacked, the fx were great, I laughed, I cried, and overall I totally recommend seeing.
My shopping cart
As mentioned, I’m shopping for strappy heels. Here are a few of the things I’m seeing, but I’ll come back when I’ve pulled the trigger.
In the fun color category, I can’t stop looking at green heels, and I love the metallic finish. First up, we have Sezane snake embossed Mary Jane block heels; these funky gold pumps from Anthropologie, and just for fun these very green but very chic Prada heels.
On the more neutral side of the house (all of these come in other colors) we have the very affordable so can probably wear one season Lulu pumps with a strappy ankle detail; these ASOS beauties have a natural-like fabric texture; and another pretty classic strappy silhouette at an affordable price from ASOS.
Back to color! These aren’t quite what I’m looking for, but I do think they’re good summer shoes. Easy way to get on the green trend with these simple heels from Zara; these Marc Fisher strappy, low-block heels would be an easy pop of color for the summer and come in neutral colors; same with these Alohas which come in a few different color combos!
Also not what I’m looking for, but I love these red kitten heels by Steve Madden, and if I were still a pageant girly or going to prom, these Azalea Wang “Popstar Sandals” would be a NEED, not a WANT.
Screen time
I can’t stop watching Hacks on Max. It’s not new, but no one told me about it! It’s like a sitcom version of Marvelous Mrs. Masiel. The story follows an unlikely partnership between a mouthy 25 year old out of work comedy writer and washed up Vegas comedian Deborah Vance. The generational humor is equally distributed. Hilarious, a little crass, and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
I must also say that the flashy main character Deborah Vance’s sequin stage wardrobe is giving me some real pageant flashbacks. In an endearing way.
Sabrina Carpenter’s Please Please Please music video. What a hot young couple and a fun song. It’s embarrassing how many times I’ve listened to it already, oops. I’m inspired to expand my color fur collection! It’s currently at zero, but I’m thinking it should be more like these exact two.
I started Challengers and couldn’t be bothered to finish it. I rented it for a girl’s night in, but even from the comfort of my couch, It was unfortunately boring. Let’s get my girl Zendaya in a better movie next time.
Everytime Variety drops a new season of Actors on Actors I’m convinced I’ll watch them all.
Obviously I started with the Kim Kardashian and Chloe Sevigny. Look, I’m a Kardashian apologist, and it’s even a little much for me that she got half a season of American Horror Story and is the buzz of the season.
And what was she wearing? She’s been wearing this weird bodysuit with elongated shoe-tights for a little too long for me. In the interview, this was paired with what i can only describe as a Balenciaga jock strap. Let me know if you know what it actually is.
Chloe Sevigny has been very gracious about their silly little interview. She also looked amazing.
My favorite moment from the 40 minutes of my life I’ll never get back?
“We could never drive down in a Rolls Royce in Beverly Hills these days. With all the shopping bags out? You’d get robbed!” Tragic news from the West Cast.
Once again I’ve made it through about an episode and a half of the series.
TLDR: If you’re in NYC get tickets to Uncle Vanya, and if you aren’t watching Hacks, let me know when you start.
Reading list
If you don’t have enough denim discourse in your life - and let’s face it who does - you must read this article in the Washington Post, “Denim is getting weird again.” It’s about the “Frankenstein” moment of denim we’re having with the rise of the “denim-adventurous ethos” inspired by the resurgence of early 2000s fashion.
What?
Almost anything is fair game with denim at the moment. And not just according to some lofty WaPo piece. I notice it when I’m shopping walking around and people watching, too. Wide-leg jeans, jeans with cut-outs and embellishments, denim shirts, cropped jeans, printed denim hats, and even still the occasional skinny jean. When it comes to denim people really seem to be gravitating towards what’s uniquely flattering or their personal preference rather than just one style having a chokehold on us all.
Personally, I’m here for it. More denim, more better.
May the increase of variety lead to a world in which we can all find jeans we love as much as I love these from Anine Bing (photographed above with the corset top). Months in and I can’t stop wearing them, and I’m still getting asked where they’re from. They aren’t stretchy, but they’re soft enough they don’t need to be. Worn in without feeling worn out.
Acquired taste
Interested in your take on this one. While shopping this weekend, my friend and I came across a relic from the 2000s I haven’t seen in a while. The bandage dress.
Before you totally lose your mind, you should know it was at Guess, and I think they sell these whether or not they’re in style.
But if they are coming back, and they might be…are we in? Honestly, I have faith that someone can modernize the style in a cool way. However, if they come back in their straight 2000s force, well, I was too flat to pull it off as a teenager, and that’s when I was wearing bombshell push-up bras. I’ve long embraced the flat chested life, so never say never, but I think this look still may not be for me.
Let me know what you think!
That’s all for this week! Thanks for reading. Tell your friends!
Much love until next time.
XX,
Emili
